I hear many times from Americans living here in Germany, that what they miss most about the US is being able to do things on Sundays. I am always surprised by this statement as many times I have problems deciding on just one thing to do on a Sunday here in Germany-land.
This past Sunday we headed out on our trusty SAAB steed with dog in tow and began our day believing we were going to the local garden center (that is an adventure in itself...amazing place), but on arrival we were minutes too early so we decided....change of plan, (obviously I was driving)...we headed to the castle Strahlenberg for a walk before the store opened...Again plan foiled by no parking. I think the castle was closed for the day for a private party, most likely a wedding. Weinheim was mentioned and we were off along the Bergstrasse, you know now what that means...remember? (mountain road).
When we arrived in Weinheim we headed to the Altstadt, (old town) and were amazed by the throngs of people eating and drinking along the hauptstrasse, (main street). And what a beautiful street it was...raising up a hill that ended at a beautiful red stone church. You see many things constructed of this red stone here in this area and someone once mentioned to me that they call it sand stone. Beautiful color it adds to the local area.
We wandered around the Schloss park, (castle park) and into the exotic gardens which was packed with picnickers and children playing with pollywogs along the small lake. Accordion music filled the lilac scented air. There was a juggler with a broken arm that was obviously not slowed a bit by his injury..I couldn't help thinking...did he injure himself learning the ol' chain saw juggle. Sorry...that is where my mind goes when unleashed.
So, I am sorry to say this is it for my tale as I must hustle. I just spent 4 hours this morning in post process of all the many photos and the dog, grumbling in his sleep at my feet needs a bath...and a hair cut. I wonder if I should address my own personal grooming issues while letting him enjoy the rabbit chase I am sure he is fantasizing about...blissfully unaware of the dastardly deeds I have planned for his afternoon.
So, this is what you do on a warm, lazy Sunday afternoon in Weinheim.
