First foray into France....

We arrived home late last night, tired from many hours on the road and discovering France. We quickly made calls to fathers as it was Father's day and tumbled right into our nice soft beds. I of course had to fight my hairy friend Clover who beat me into my side of the bed and had already confiscated my pillow. I think he was trying to convince me he was "warming it" for me.

So our marathon whirl wind trip to see a small part of France and our dear friends was a great success. We had two wonderful nights just outside of Reims at the home of our dear friends Stéphane and Nathlie. We were able to finally meet their latest addition Paul, his title is "Prince of France", and also spend time with Stéphane's Mom and Dad who were also visiting. It was a full house and it was wonderful.

On the first morning after a delicious French breakfast we drove into Reims with Stéphane and saw the cathedral...it is a must on any visit. Dale was amazed. From there we visited a few beautiful l'art nouveau buildings that Stéphane had purchased for his business' and then we ventured on to see a ruined castle in Fere en Tardenois and also the American, British and German WWI cemeteries.

In the evening we once again had a wonderful evening with friends who are more like family. We ate the most delicious meal of chicken with green olives and lemon....and the boys played chess. Sadly Dale was unable to defend the American honor, but it was a great game.

On Sunday morning we share many kisses all around, (4 kisses are shared with family here), said our thanks yous and farewells and were off to discover Verdun.

Halfway from Reims to our home in Germany lies the "City of Peace" as Verdun is now called. In WWI it was far from peaceful and shows many of it's old scars of this time. We visited the Fort Douaumont, the trench of the bayonets, the OSSUARY and we visited the town of Douaumont which has not existed other than crater holes and markers since WWI.

You're sure keeping that kid busy! I've not been to Verdun so really enjoyed those photos - almost feel as though I've made the trip but know that the scale must be amazing when you're actually standing in the middle of it.
